Protect the income
behind your everyday.

Disability income insurance can pay a portion of your income when an illness or injury meets the policy’s definition of disability. The details make the difference.

Medical bills are only part of the picture.

Health insurance helps with covered medical expenses. Disability income insurance is designed to help with lost income. That income can help support everyday expenses while you meet the policy’s benefit requirements.

Four details to understand before you apply

  1. The definition of disability. Some policies focus on your own occupation; others use a broader ability-to-work standard. Definitions can change over time within the same policy.
  2. The benefit amount. Coverage typically replaces part of your income. Existing insurance and other benefits may affect the amount available or payable.
  3. The elimination period. This is the qualifying time before benefits become payable. Plan for how you would cover expenses during that period.
  4. The benefit period. This sets how long benefits may continue while you remain eligible. It is separate from the waiting period.

Short-term and long-term needs

Short-term coverage addresses a more limited period. Long-term coverage is designed for a longer interruption, subject to the contract. Review both your emergency savings and any employer benefits before deciding where a gap exists.

What affects availability and price?

Your occupation and duties, income, age, health history, selected benefits, and state can all matter. Underwriting may involve medical and financial review. Exclusions or modified terms may apply.

Already covered through work?

Bring your benefits summary. Review the monthly cap, taxes, offsets, portability, and disability definition. A workplace benefit is a useful starting point, and a review can help you understand what you actually have.
